Martin’s Story
Working in the garden? Exercise? Last year, these had become activities that Dutchman Martin B., had started to hate. Even sneezing and coughing became an issue. With every unexpected or uncontrolled movement, he would lose some drops of urine. And this problem seemed to be getting worse every day.
Fortunately the cause was known. About a year ago, Martin had been treated successfully for prostate cancer. But with the removal of the diseased prostate, the neighboring sphincter muscle was also affected.
A course of physiotherapy was tried, but this did not provide the hoped-for relief. Then Martin’s urologist, Dr. John Heesakkers in Nijmegen, suggested ProACT. Martin could leave the hospital the day after the procedure. Initially he was not quite dry, Heesakkers adjusted the balloons four weeks after implantation on an out-patient basis. Martin has been able to resume his normal activities after this procedure.
